With so much negativity creeping into Rika’s mind, she was compelled to write and record “Have Faith”.
Worldly Mentality Brought On Depression And Anger
Between the year 2005 – 2006 Rika felt very discouraged. Her worldly mentality brought on depression and anger because she was focused on material things. Her self-centered thinking got the best of her, but deep inside Rika felt guilty. She knew that she was blessed. “There are so many people that struggle daily and don’t have a roof over their heads, or food to eat and I’m complaining because I’m down on my luck for a moment” – Rika – Rai
Employment And Career Instability Brought Confusion
Rika worked in the mortgage industry for most of her life. Being in an unpredictable industry she found herself in and out of work due to the market. After working for four years for a company, Rika saw a new opportunity with another establishment and made the transition. In less than 30 days the company laid her off along with several other employees. Later, she found out the business closed their doors completely. Rika was discouraged because she truly thought she was making the right decision for her career. Thinking about it today, God was preparing her for other opportunities, she stated. “The downtime allowed me to re-evaluate my life, focus on my music, and re-direct my energy on something more meaningful” – Rika – Rai
Rika Wasn’t Feeling Confident About Herself
Rika found herself trying to compare her life to others and wanting to live ”that life”. Social media and tv shows portray a false sense of reality and one can fall victim to this if you’re uncertain of your own identity. Unfortunately, Rika dwelled on her inadequacies and an ideology that was different from what she viewed when looking in the mirror. She wasn’t small enough and didn’t feel pretty. Rika sought out everything she felt was wrong with her and failed to view the God in her, the true beauty. She was able to inspire others daily, but she couldn’t find anything to inspire her own life. She only knew that she was unique from her style to her voice!
Rika’s Connection With God Was Lacking
For a nonbeliever, it’s typical when things go wrong the natural reaction is to panic. However, as believers, the Bible teaches us that praying is our connection to God. He supplies all of our needs according to His riches and glory (Philippians 4:19). Somehow Rika replaced that truth with fear and the uncertainties in her life, which consumed the word of God. Rika temporarily lost faith and could not believe that God was in control of her every step. She became anxious and began to worry about things that were out of her control. Interestingly, Rika understood what Scripture says about situations she was experiencing. She just did not apply the works for God’s grace to manifest:
Matthew 6:25-27: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
Matthew 6:34: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
In summation, worrying doesn’t bring more days to life and doesn’t make room for positivity! It will more likely block what God is trying to say to us in our time of tribulation. Now Rika realizes that God never left her. He was allowing her to make her own decisions even if it meant forgetting about His promises. She made the choice to turn back to God and allow him to work on her behalf.
The Creation of Have Faith
Have Faith is a song that gives way to Rika’s innermost fears and insecurities. When she decided to write the song, she did not have a studio to record her testimonies. Rika sat in the dark in her living room with a computer on a tv tray. She had old recording software and a $20 microphone praying her heart out through songs. “Just thinking about it reminds me that little is much”, says Rika. “My heart was open to hearing a word, and I wasn’t afraid of the answers. The verses of Have Faith are my questions, and the chorus is God’s answers to me” – Rika – Rai.
1 John 5:14-15: 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us whatever we ask, we know that we have what we asked of him.
Today, Rika listens to her recording Have Faith often. Especially when she feels negativity creeping into her mind. She often cries when she hears the song, but she always finds herself rejoicing. A sense of peace comes over her. Through her musical storytelling, Rika’s prayer is that someone is encouraged to continue to choose a life full of the goodness that God desires for them.
