You Are Great, Oh Lord
The Thief Comes Only To Steal, Kill, And Destroy
When Angela Owino was at the age of 28, her life was good! She established small businesses in the motor cycle transport sector and computer cyber industry. She could afford a two-bedroomed house with ease and even started buying small plots to build single houses for low-income earners. She had a vision that her businesses would expand for the greater good. But that all changed when the love of her life left her broke with nothing left to show for.
It never dawned on her for a minute that her fiancé would bring her so much pain. He helped her invest and achieve many of her accomplishments. Yet, that’s exactly what he did! It appeared that Angela’s love overshadowed what was not reciprocated. It was like a scripted scenario from the scene of a movie! Angela was left with a loan and other debts to pay off. She was too deep into the relationship to realize that she was the only person in love. 8 years of courting would result to a wedding coming to a halt! To make matters worst, more problems followed.
What Could Possibly Go Wrong Next?
Still dealing with the financial and emotional loss, Angela received a letter at work stating that she had been demoted from her managerial position to a job in the comparison to a handy man! Angela had been turned upside down in a snap. Times when she was alone, she cried hopelessly. Life took a toll on her in the most extreme way! On one occasion Angela overdosed from the depression medication she was prescribed. Thankfully, she was unable to hold down what was in her stomach and regurgitated the medicine. Angela cried out to God in what felt like a spur of the moment, “this is too much for me”. Angela remembered that she had a bible. It was a gift from her sister who had once told her she can never run from God. She crawled from the bathroom and while still on her knees grabbed it from under the table that stayed beside her bed. She sat up. cried out again, then randomly opened to the page to Psalms 104-1. It reads:
“Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty.”
She did not think much of the verse or understood why she even opened her bible. She was not a prayerful person. In fact, she had no intentions of praying that night. She just needed something, anything that would soothe her painful heart. Even though her sister planted a seed giving her a bible, Angela did not meditate on scriptures. Instead, she allowed the word of God to be consumed by her concerns of the evil and distasteful acts of her fiancé. Her experience is like The Parable of the Weeds which is found in Matthew 13:24-43. To paraphrase, it states:
“The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels”
The Discovery Of “You Are Great, Oh Lord”
As the Bible stay opened and during the spiritual battle over Angela’s heart, a tear had dropped from her eye. It was a drop of salty water that her grieving eye could no longer hold and set free. It dropped on a page of the bible and soaked the line that read: “Oh Lord my God, you are very great”. It was another opportunity for Angela to gaze at the scripture and read what God was trying to teach her! But Angela immediately closed the book because she could not discern the relevance in her situation at the time! It was apparent that Angela was not ready to seek ye first the kingdom of God whenever all hell breaks loose!
After 3 months passed, Angela felt better. Indeed, time is what Angela needed before she would allow God’s words to change her situation around. Not ready to accept what all happened several months ago, Angela went to church looking for answers. In fact, she was now angry because of her financial setback, to say the least.
She fell down to her knees yelling at God in her heart. She specifically remembers telling Him “Lord, if you want to kill me with frustrations in my life, then I would rather you kill me here so that I may die in church”. After an hour of scolding God, Angela felt better. She couldn’t really explain why she felt better when it was only her who did all the talking! But The Holy Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”. That’s exactly what Angela decided to do. She began to write a song and her very first line was “You are great oh Lord”. She smiled as if she figured out why she had to go through what she went through. She found a new relationship with the one who would love her at all times. Her circumstances would soon change to her advantage.
I Have A New Love, Indeed He Is Great
One year later, Angela got a scholarship to pursue her master’s degree and got a permanent job immediately after graduating. Not only that, the Lord opened doors for Angela in other ways. Angela’s friends tell her that she has human connections and that is why she has received favor after favor. But she just smiles because there’s a new love in her life with a higher power. He is the one that goes before her! He proclaims to never leave her or forsake her! His name is Jesus! Indeed, the Lord is great!
